EFAS Official Statement on Surgical Training

The European Foot and Ankle Society (EFAS) considers that surgical procedures on the foot and ankle should only be performed by medically trained surgeons who are fully accountable for their professional advice, decision-making, treatment and outcomes. This means both fully qualified orthopaedic and trauma surgeons, and trainees in orthopaedic and trauma surgery. Due to significant variations in regulations, training standards, reimbursement policies, and legal frameworks between countries, EFAS strongly advises that patients with foot and ankle conditions entrust their care solely to medically qualified surgeons—either fully licensed or in accredited training—who can be held legally responsible for their actions. EFAS does not, therefore, provide technical, surgical training for non-medically qualified practitioners, although they are welcome to participate in the educational sessions of the scientific congress.
